TU Chemnitz (TUC) is represented by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The department of Advanced Powertrains (ALF) has close connections with car manufacturers and suppliers as well as with Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Processes (IWU) in Chemnitz in Germany.

Professor Thomas von Unwerth has been the head of the Department for Advanced Powertrains since 2010. In his eight years at Volkswagen Corporate Research, he led the team for fuel cells and fuel cell systems. Currently, he is also president of the Saxonian innovation cluster for hydrogen and fuel cells, and he oversees KICStartH2 work with his university.
